Home Problems: Broken Drainpipes

By Cindy Smith

Damaged pipes are ordinary especially if you have a house. Most of the time, repairing it is scary if we are not knowledgeable about it. Requesting professional help is usually our only option and this could really be expensive. The truth is repairing pipes and pipe fittings are very easy if we know how to do it. Here are some suggestions that can help you repair your damaged drainpipe.

The very first step is by getting rid of the damaged part. Running water in the house is forbidden throughout this fix. To begin, you need to wrap a sheet of paper around the pipe and you should cut squarely through the pipe using a keyhole saw. You'll need to repeat this process at the other end of the damaged section. Stuff paper towels or newspapers into the pipes to block sewer smell if the pipe is directly linked to your sewer.

The second step is to cut the substitute pipe. Fitting a slip coupling above each standing pipe will do the task. Measuring the space above and transferring the measurement to the new pipe needs to be done next. After this, cut the replacement section with a handsaw and miter box. You should also think about using a paper guide to make the square cut.

Making use of the solvent cement is the 3rd step. With a sharp knife, deburr and bevel the pipe ends to assist water run and improve the welding action of the solvent cement. Wipe the ends of PVC and ABS pipes. Spread over a thick coat of solvent cement to the pipe ends, half the width of the slip coupling. To make the task easier, use a half-inch brush or applicator for a 3-inch-wide coupling.

The fourth and final step is to fit the replacement pipe. Take note that this should be done rapidly. To do this, you need to lift the new pipe into place and slip one coupling over its joint, then the other. Each coupling must cover an equal quantity of old and new pipe. You must then give each coupling a quarter-turn to spread the cement while wiping extra cement with a tidy fabric. Allow the joint to cure for at least two to three hours will finish the work.
