Consider a Break in Central Portugal

Portugal tempts the visitor with snow-capped mountains and lush green pine and eucalyptus forests in the North and Central areas, to stunning cliff-lined beaches in the South. The locality of Portugal often called the "Green Heart" of Portugal, is the Central region. This is due to the aromatic covering of pine and eucalyptus trees over the valleys and mountains. Natural beauty is prevalent in this area. Those who visit Central Portugal cannot miss the breath-taking nature of the environment in which they find themselves.

Scenic rural Central Portugal and its wonderful beaches on the Silver Coast are better experienced by car. Alongside the natural beauty of Central Portugal are interests for the more active visitor. Passtimes include: kayaking; mountaineering; mountain-biking and fishing. Numerous river beaches burst in Central Portugal, proffering restaurants, bars, water sports and pedal boats. The Montebello Golf and Spa Resort is a wonderful place to go to, set in lovely, relaxing surroundings. Additionally, there is the stunning, historic university city of Coimbra.

Coimbra was the capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1260. Today, it is the principal city of Central Portugal. Central Portugal's biggest tourist magnet is the University of Coimbra. It is situated on a hill that prevails over the city and it is the chief seat of learning in Portugal. There is a wonderful Baroque Chapel at the University; a Library which is home to over 300,000 historical books and intricately decorated ceilings; and of note, are the 18th century Botanical gardes, noted as some of the best in Europe.

Coimbra was an important field of the Aeminium in Roman times. There is still an aqueduct and cryptoporticus remaining from that period. close is the ancient city of Conimbriga which contains some of the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe. Furthermore, the collection of museums in Coimbra are great, such as, the City museum and the Museo Nacional Machado de Castor, which is regarded as the main museum in Portugal.

The life-blood of Central Portugal is the River Mondego, which makes its way through the hills and valleys. Coimbra is where the river is at its most dramatic after its voyage through the villages, towns and mountains. It is feasible to enjoy the river in many ways. Either by kayak, ferry ride or sitting having a cold drink on its banks.

The citizens of Portugal are famous for their warmth, friendliness and hospitality, never is this more so than in the area of Central Portugal. Efforts to speak Portuguese to locals, even at the most basic level can frequently be rewarded with a big smile and a glass of homemade wine or port.

On average 30% of the country's native population work abroad at any one point in time. The Portuguese populace have a history of migrant working. More or less all families in Portugal have someone who is working in different country and this leads to a exceedingly adaptable position to those coming into Portugal, either as a visitor, to live or to work.

If a visitor is looking for a mixture of experiences and differences of place to visit, then Central Portugal is the place to go. It is a region of spectacular natural beauty steeped in history, tradition and culture. History, culture and tradition are inset in the region and breath-taking scenery surrounds and engulfs it.
