By Corinne Daniel

Summer is officially here and what other way to start the season but by taking a key west tarpon fishing trip. Key west is located at the end part of the Florida keys island chain and it has a lot to offer to those that are very passionate about fishing. Tarpon fish is very prominent in the area which explains why enthusiasts should give it a try.

Tarpons could be very tight mouth at times and this explains why it could be quite daunting to catch one. Tarpon might even bite particularly on nighttime. When one is fishing tarpons for the first time, then learning a few guidelines is advisable. Although one might be doing this hobby for the longest time tarpons are unique creature, hence reading a few pointers on how to successfully get one would most likely make a great difference.

In addition to that, tarpons jump and thrash around violently when hooked. This needs one to quickly and accurately manipulate their line. Sometimes enthusiast long to see this moment. Seeing a seven foot fish leap at least ten feet out of the water near to their boat is quite astonishing and something that one have the credit to brag about.

Fishing for tarpons is quite challenging, here are a few simple tips that could increase one's chances in catching one. Although tarpons can be caught using lures or baits, a bait with a circle hook on it is highly recommended. Indeed, circle hooks are effective among tarpons but still one has to know what he's doing for one to finish the task successfully.

Hooks could either be a 6/o J or a 9/o circle hook. For beginners, J hooks would be more productive and much more forgiving as well. The size of one's hook will depend on the size fish one is targeting as well as one the bait. Although J hooks are acceptable, circle hooks are highly recommended but only to those who know how to use one.

Tarpons have bony mouths and that makes it even more challenging to catch one. That being said, it is also important for one to secure a good hook and a sharp one at that. As soon as you have hooked one, brace yourself as it will most likely leap out of the water and thrash around. During this time, it is important for one to take full control on the rod.

Once the fish leaps into the air, drop the rod quickly to slack the line. This is one of those rare situations when one has to slack the line when fighting the fish. Keeping the line tight will only make tarpons move violently and that could cause it to snap. When the fish goes back to the water, quickly reel the line tight by raising the rod.

This part right here is probably the hardest part. One has to move or maneuver his line very quickly to disorient the fish. It takes practice for one to master this part, and most probably a lot of strength too. Tarpons could weigh rather heavily hence one should prepare for that. Anyone that is passionate enough for this activity should definitely try to fish tarpons as it is challenging yet fun experience.

Key west tarpon fishing trips no doubt are fun. That is why every enthusiast are encouraged to try this one, at least once.
