Different Roles Of Horses In Society - The Many Situations Horses Can Be Found In

By Byron Jonas

The different roles of horses in society have gone from being used by everyone for daily activities to having specific roles, depending on the country and location of the people they live with. They were once the main source of transportation for an individual or a family. Today the roles horses play have become much broader indeed.

Companion - These animals are considered to be a welcome addition to many homes. They make a wonderful traveling companion for someone who enjoys trail riding. Some people like to have them as pets, even if they don't ever saddle up and go for a ride. There's something about a horse that is calming to many people.

Security - Most people have heard of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which no longer utilizes the services of these animals. Even though this group of officers has switched to using vehicles, a number of large cities still provide a few of their officers with these animals for patrolling purposes. Mounted police officers are able to maneuver through a crowded city relatively easily. They also sit high above the crowd, making it easier to see when trouble is brewing within a large group of people.

Guide - Guide ones have taken the place of a seeing-eye dog for many people who are blind. The Guide Horse Program has been in place since 1999 and doesn't charge for the use of their guide ponies. A horse leading the way is a great alternative for someone who is seeing-impaired and allergic to dogs. Quite a few people also have a fear of dogs, which is yet another reason to use a guide horse instead.

Entertainment - These animals have been used to entertain humans for quite some time. A rodeo is an excellent place to catch a horse doing a variety of exciting activities to amuse the crowd. Barrel racing, steer wrestling, calf roping, bronco riding, cart races, draft horse competitions, and agility tests are just some of the many events these animals and riders tend to compete in together.

Companion - Some people chose to keep this animal simply because they enjoy having them around. Little kids get ponies to ride around the yard and to learn responsibility. As a companion animal, these animals might not be for everyone, but they certainly are well-loved by the people who truly regard them as a loving pet instead of a livelihood.

Although the different roles of horses in society have changed, this doesn't mean they are less a part of human existence than they used to be. This simply means humans have continued to find a place in society for these wonderful beings.
