A Few Facts About Breyer Horses

By Chloe Gib

Breyer horses are beautiful equine figurines that have been around since mid 20th century. The first model was part of a set that included a quality clock. The model was known as the Western Horse and it is on a 1:9 scale model. The dimensions are usually about eight inches high and eleven inches long.

Breyer is best known for its horse figures, but the company also distributes sculptures of wild animals and more recently a dog series. The company also produced items related to the barnyard and to horse care, such as tack and grooming. Barnyard animals and cats can also be purchased as part of the amazingly detailed and colored models.

The smallest model is the 1:64 model. These are the Mini Whinnies with adult model horses only one inch in size. Stablemates series models are formed of 1:32 scale or 2.75 high by 2.36 long. Paddock Pals are no longer manufactured, but are 1:24 scale or 6 inches by 4 inches. Ponies series was replaced by Pony Gals series. Both these series are the same size as the Classics Series or about 7 inches by 5 inches. These are 1:12 scale.

There are several ways in which Breyer collectors can satisfy their desire to own these exquisitely detailed models. The rarer models can bring prices in 4 digits. The company has sponsored a festival for collectors and fans at Lexington, Kentucky since 1990. Some collector's pieces can be found at various auction sites around the Web.

Often, classic toy sites on the internet such as those that sell retro video game consoles and collectible toys will carry some of the horse models. You may be able to find other collectors who are interested in trading models. You could also post an inquiry when you are trying to locate a specific model or series.

The models are formed of a special type of plastic, known as cellulose acetate. The molded units are hand-painted, finished and inspected. A completed product features the work of up to 20 separate individuals. The models that are aimed at the younger market may have additional features such as jointed legs, necks and heads, as well as manes and tails that can be arranged and groomed.

Whether your interest is horses, or collecting, Breyer horses are a very collectible product. There are many models and they are each attractive. The market prices have held steady for more than six decades.
