Bed And Breakfast St Augustine Can Give A Glimpse Of History

By Sarah Wilson

Bed and breakfast St Augustine can be an interesting step back in time. This is a very old city and a leisurely stay at one of the historic bed and breakfast establishments can give insights into the layers of time upon which compose America's history. Europeans are apt to dismiss America as 'having no history' but a stroll through the paved streets can show how history is everywhere.

The city is about 10 square miles in extent but about two of these are under water. It has access to the Atlantic Ocean through a river inlet. Though close to the tropical cyclone belt it has not been hit by hurricanes since 1964. The climate and availability of first class accommodation and facilities make tourism a vibrant industry.

This part of the continent was first explored by French and Spanish adventurers when the colonial movement was in its infancy. European politics and the shifting balances of power in Europe had many consequences that might have seemed inconsequential to European though the left indelible marks on remote territories across the planet.

In 1565 a Spanish explorer named the territory when he sighted land on the feast day of Augustine of Hippo. The Spanish flirted with the idea of building fortifications and extending their territories but were thwarted by French and English rivals. English visitors will probably be interested in the fact that Sir Francis Drake played a role in one of the invasions of the city.

During the Napoleonic era Spain had difficulty in retaining her colonies, being hard pressed at home. Florida was ceded to America but this did not put an end to wars and conflicts. The American civil war left its marks on the city. Native American history and the institution of slavery are written into the history of the town.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century the city entered a new era of prosperity. Henry Flagler was instrumental in developing new building programs. Many fine examples of Victorian architecture were built then and survive, many now used as bed and breakfast St Augustine establishments. Guests may enjoy fine accommodation and cuisine as they explore historic sites and inns that reflect American history.
