Selecting The Stranger: Halloween Wigs

By Jane Alman

Halloween wigs give a great big dose of energy to any costume party, not just those on the actual night of ghosts and goblins. They are a vital part of helping people turn into completely different people, or at least letting them pretend to for the evening. They are the sort of playful item that makes even going shopping for them a great time.

The most obvious need for such a specialty hairpiece is for a costume designed to impersonate some celebrity. It is astonishing how many famous people are immediately identifiable by their hair. It could be Elvis, or Marilyn, or George Washington.

Then there are hairpieces that suggest not a single person but a general type, a type that is as familiar as any media star. The Mohawk piece will bring to mind either a post-apocalyptic punk or a Native American, depending upon the clothing. The giant Afro is not so ambiguous, at least not about the decade being celebrated.

Of course there are superstars from the more fantastic corners of the imagination, many coming from movies and other pop culture. Hair might not be everything, but it is still indispensable to make at least a good effort. The Frankenstein monster, or his satirical knock-off, Herman Munster, should be flat headed with a thin mop of hair, and Goldilocks should have a style that is ornate and, yes, golden.

Sometimes everyone gets caught doing other things until the last moment, and there is no time left either to make up or put on any character at all. In times like that, a wig bought at the last moment at least shows other party-goers some effort. If Bob has a crew cut, when wearing a Marilyn wig he might not be Marilyn exactly, but he will fit in at the soiree anyway.

Fortunately, those impulse shoppers among us will face little trouble locating some place that sells novelty hairpieces. Few of us are out of range of some neighborhood discount stores, pawn shops or military outlet stores, and full scale costume shops are hardly rare. With just a bit of foresight, the Halloween shopper has numerous online costumers to choose from.

Specialty hairpieces probably do more to let people to pretend they are someone else than any part of the costume. Perhaps it is the detail to choose first when we go costume shopping. Whether it is at the office or in the classroom, the party will be livelier thanks to Halloween wigs.
